Private vs group swim lessons — which is worth it for your child?

What each format actually costs

Group is by far the most cost-effective way to learn — but "cheapest per lesson" isn't always "best fit." Here's what you'd pay for each format at Aqua Swim Academy this semester:

Cost per format (Fall 2026)
OptionPriceNotes
Group — semester (Coppet, Fribourg)CHF 590≈ CHF 31 per lesson · 4-6 swimmers per coach
Group — semester (Malley, Montreux, Vernier, EHL)CHF 690≈ CHF 36 per lesson · 4-6 swimmers per coach
Group — monthlyCHF 159/moRolling; 30-day cancellation notice
Semi-private (2 swimmers, 30 min)CHF 120 totalCHF 60 per swimmer · ideal for siblings
Private (1:1, 30 min)CHF 95Coach's full attention
At-home private (Geneva, 45 min)CHF 100Coach comes to your pool

Add the CHF 50 annual registration fee once per swimmer, and you have the full picture.

When group lessons work better

Group is the default for a reason. Your child gets:

  • Consistency. Same coach, same slot, same pool — for the whole semester.
  • Peers. Kids progress faster when they see other kids swimming next to them. A three-year-old who won't put their face in the water for a coach often will when they see the girl beside them doing it.
  • Predictable cost. You know upfront what six months of swimming will cost you, and it's the cheapest per-lesson option we offer.
  • Long-term progression. Our nine-level curriculum is built around the group format. Kids who stay in group for a full year or two typically advance through two or three levels.

If your child is confident in the water, curious, and comfortable in a small group of peers — book group and don't overthink it. Find your level with our quick assessment or drop in for a CHF 39 trial.

When a private lesson pays off

Group doesn't work for everyone — especially in these situations:

  • Genuine fear of water. A child who cries at the pool edge or won't get in cannot benefit from a group. They need one coach, focused entirely on them, building trust for two or three sessions before you'd even consider group.
  • Fast catch-up. A seven-year-old who's never had lessons and wants to swim by summer holidays. Group would put them in Level 3 with much younger children — three or four privates get them stroke-ready in weeks, then they can join a group at the right level.
  • Adults starting or restarting. Adult group classes exist at Lausanne EHL and Coppet, but many adults prefer the privacy and pace of a private lesson, at least at first.
  • Targeted stroke work. A competitive swimmer preparing for a race, or a Level 6 swimmer who wants clean butterfly. Private is the format for surgical improvements.
  • Scheduling constraints. If your family's schedule doesn't fit any of our group slots at your nearest pool, a private is bookable at any time we have coach availability.

Semi-private — the middle ground

Semi-private is the option most parents don't know about, and it's often the sweet spot for families.

CHF 120 for two swimmers, 30 minutes. That's CHF 60 per swimmer — twice as much as a group session, half as much as a private, and the coach's attention is split just two ways.

The two swimmers should be at the same level and roughly the same age. Ideal fit:

  • Siblings. Two kids in the same 30 minutes, split cost, one drop-off.
  • A parent + child. Some adults join their nervous four-year-old in a semi-private to get them comfortable together.
  • Two friends whose parents want them to swim together — often works well because kids stick with an activity when a friend does.

Book by emailing luna@aquaswim.ch — we'll match you with a coach and time.

At-home private lessons (Geneva)

If you have a pool at home and live in the Geneva area, we send a coach to you. CHF 100 for 45 minutes, extra time available on request. Best for:

  • Multiple children in one household who'd otherwise need separate trips to a pool
  • A child who's more relaxed in familiar surroundings
  • Fitting swim into a schedule that can't accommodate pool travel + changing time

Not available outside Geneva at this time.

How to decide

If you're not sure which format fits, a CHF 39 trial group lesson is the cheapest way to find out. Book one at your closest pool. After 30 minutes with a coach, you (and the coach) will know whether your child is a group fit or would benefit from starting private.

If the trial goes well: enrol in group. If the trial shows your child needs more focused attention: switch to a private or semi-private package — we credit the trial toward the first private lesson.

No pressure, no guesswork.

What about progression?

The curriculum is the same across formats — Levels 1 through 9, following the QualiCert Swiss swim school standard. What changes is pace:

  • Group: progression is set by the group's readiness — usually one level every three to six months.
  • Semi-private: slightly faster, because the coach adjusts to just two swimmers.
  • Private: can be considerably faster on foundational skills (breath, float, first strokes) because there's no waiting for a group's turn — but stroke refinement still benefits from group energy at higher levels.

Many families use both over time: private lessons to break through a plateau or overcome fear, then group to consolidate and progress socially.

Frequently asked questions

How much cheaper is a group lesson than a private one, really?

A group lesson works out to around CHF 31 per session on the semester plan. A private lesson is CHF 95 for 30 minutes. So group is roughly one third the cost per lesson — but you're sharing the coach with three to five other swimmers, and progression is set by the group's pace.

If I book a semi-private for two siblings, do I pay twice?

No — semi-private is CHF 120 total for two swimmers in the same 30 minutes, not CHF 120 each. Two siblings splitting a semi-private come out to CHF 60 per swimmer — cheaper than a private, more attention than a group.

Can I switch from group to private mid-semester if it's not working?

Yes. If your child is struggling in group or has plateaued, email luna@aquaswim.ch and we'll credit the unused portion of the semester toward a private-lesson package. No penalty.

Are private lessons at your pool, or can they come to my home?

Both. Pool-based private lessons happen at our regular locations (Coppet, Aubonne, Malley, Montreux, Fribourg). We also offer at-home lessons in Geneva at CHF 100 for 45 minutes if you have your own pool — the coach comes to you.

Is a private lesson worth it for a child who's afraid of the water?

Usually, yes. A group class can be overwhelming for a swimmer who's genuinely fearful — they need a coach's full attention to build trust before they can benefit from a group. Three or four private lessons often bring them to the point where they can join a group happily.

What if my child is very advanced — should I skip group?

Not necessarily. Our Master Techniques and Master Endurance levels (Levels 7-9) are group classes designed for strong swimmers who want stroke refinement, endurance, or race preparation. Private lessons make sense if you want targeted work on a specific stroke or a competitive time — otherwise, the group energy pushes them harder.
