How much back can Swiss health insurance pay for kids' swim lessons?

Which insurance pays for swim lessons?
Your complementary health insurance (assurance complémentaire, or LCA) is the one that covers swim lessons — not your mandatory base insurance (LAMal). Most Swiss families have a complementary policy bundled with their LAMal, often without realising how much it reimburses for children's sports.
Because Aqua Swim Academy is QualiCert certified, our lessons and camps qualify for reimbursement under the "preventive health" or "sports for children" category that most insurers include. The amount varies by insurer and plan level, but the range is typically CHF 200 to CHF 1,300 per year per child.
That means a semester of group lessons can be largely or even fully covered, depending on your plan and location. Monthly enrolment is also eligible — you claim it once or twice a year, depending on how your insurer batches reimbursements. Camps count too (more on that below).
Current semester, monthly, and camp rates by location are in the FAQ, and private-lesson rates are on the private-lessons page — compare them with your insurer's annual cap to see how much you'd get back.
How much will my insurer pay?
That depends on your plan. Here's what to check:
- CSS MyFlex: CHF 200–500/year depending on module
- Helsana: CHF 200–1,000/year (Completa, Sana)
- Swica: CHF 300–900/year (Completa Praeventa, Optima)
- Sanitas: CHF 300–800/year (Classic, Premium)
- Visana: CHF 200–750/year (Sana, Diversa)
- ÖKK: CHF 500–1,000/year
- Groupe Mutuel: CHF 300–800/year
- Atupri: CHF 300–1,000/year
- KPT: CHF 500–1,000/year
The easiest way to confirm is to open your insurance app or policy documents and search for "sports" or "prévention" — most insurers list the annual cap clearly. If you're not sure, call your insurer and ask: "Do you reimburse QualiCert swim lessons, and what's my annual limit?"
What about camps?
Yes — our full-day and half-day camps at Lausanne EHL and Coppet are reimbursable too. Most insurers treat camps under the same sports budget, but some cap camp reimbursement separately at up to CHF 500 per year.
A full-day week runs Monday to Friday, 09:00–16:30, with lunch included. Whatever your insurer's camp allowance is comes straight off what you paid — and your child gets five full days of swimming, games, and progression with coaches like Sabine or David. Current camp prices are in the FAQ.
If you book two weeks, the multi-week discount applies first — then you claim the reimbursement on what you actually paid.
How do I claim the reimbursement?
We make it simple. After you've paid for a semester or accumulated a few months of lessons, email luna@aquaswim.ch and ask for a paid-invoice receipt. We'll send you a PDF formatted for insurance claims, showing:
- Swimmer name and date of birth
- Service dates and total amount paid
- Our QualiCert certification number
You upload that receipt to your insurer's app (most have a claims portal now), or mail it in if your insurer still works on paper. Reimbursement usually arrives within two to four weeks.
Some parents claim once a year in December; others do it twice — once mid-year, once at year-end — to stay within annual caps without waiting twelve months.
Does the registration fee count?
No. Insurers reimburse the lesson or camp fees, not the annual registration fee or the manual-billing surcharge if you pay by bank transfer. Only the instruction itself qualifies.
What if I'm on the monthly plan?
Monthly enrolment works the same way. You pay each month on your card or by TWINT, then claim a batch of months whenever you like — most parents wait until they've paid three to six months, then submit one receipt covering the whole period. That way you're not uploading a new claim every thirty days.
The 30-day rolling notice still applies if you need to cancel, so you're not locked in — and you still get the reimbursement for the months you did attend.
What if I don't have complementary insurance?
If you only have LAMal (base insurance) and no complementary policy, swim lessons won't be reimbursed. But adding a complementary plan mid-year is possible with most insurers — it's worth a call if your family does multiple activities (swim, gym, dance) that could all be claimed under the same sports budget.
If you're not planning to add coverage, a trial lesson is still a great way to start — and it's credited toward your first month if you enrol, so the trial doesn't cost you anything extra. Current trial and monthly rates are in the FAQ.
Frequently asked questions
Will my insurer reimburse if I pay monthly instead of semester?
Yes. You simply claim a few months' worth of payments at once — most parents batch three to six months into a single receipt, then submit it to their insurer.
Can I claim back the trial lesson?
Usually not on its own, because it's considered a trial rather than ongoing instruction. But once you enrol, the trial fee is credited to your first month — and the full month is claimable. Current trial and enrolment rates are on the /en/faq page.
Does Aqua Swim send the receipt directly to my insurer?
No — Swiss insurers require you (the policyholder) to submit claims. We provide the formatted receipt by email; you upload or mail it to your insurer.
Can I claim lessons for more than one child?
Yes, as long as each child is listed on your family policy. Each swimmer gets their own receipt, and you claim up to the annual cap per child. Any sibling discount we apply doesn't affect reimbursement — your insurer sees the amount you actually paid.
What if I've already hit my annual sports cap with football or gymnastics?
Then swim lessons would exceed your cap, and your insurer won't reimburse the overlap. Some parents switch activities mid-year or split the calendar — football in autumn, swim in spring — to stay within the limit.
Do I need to submit the receipt before the end of the year?
Most insurers accept claims for the current calendar year until 31 December, or within 90 days of the invoice date (whichever is longer). Check your policy — but don't wait until 30 December, because our office is closed between Christmas and New Year.
