LAMal vs LCA — which Swiss health insurance actually pays for swim lessons?

LAMal vs LCA — which Swiss health insurance actually pays for swim lessons?

LAMal is obligatory — and does not pay for swimming

Every resident in Switzerland carries LAMal, the compulsory basic health insurance. It covers medical treatment, hospitalisation, and emergency care. It does not cover prevention, wellness, or sports courses — including swim lessons.

No matter which insurer administers your LAMal (Helsana, CSS, Swica, Groupe Mutuel, Sanitas, Visana, Concordia, Atupri, or any other), the benefit catalogue is identical and defined by federal law. Swimming falls outside that catalogue.

If you want reimbursement for your child's lessons — or your own — you need an LCA complementary plan.

LCA complementary insurance is where the money is

LCA (assurance complémentaire) policies are optional, sold by the same insurers but governed by private contract law rather than federal mandate. That means each insurer defines its own benefit list, and many include a prevention or fitness budget that covers:

  • Swim lessons at QualiCert-certified schools
  • Gym memberships
  • Yoga, pilates, and other wellness courses
  • Some camps (depending on the policy)

The reimbursement ceiling varies:

  • Helsana Sana: up to CHF 200/year for prevention courses
  • CSS Alternativa: up to CHF 500/year
  • Swica Optima: up to CHF 800/year
  • Groupe Mutuel Bonus: up to CHF 1,000/year
  • Visana Traditional: up to CHF 1,300/year
  • Sanitas Fitness Module: up to CHF 600/year
  • Concordia Plus: up to CHF 500/year

Some insurers also reimburse camp weeks separately — often up to CHF 500/year. That means a full-day camp at Coppet or Lausanne EHL (CHF 690/week) can be partially or fully covered, depending on your plan.

Aqua Swim is QualiCert-certified — that's why insurers pay

Complementary insurers only reimburse courses at QualiCert-certified providers. QualiCert is the Swiss quality label for prevention and health-promotion organisations; it audits class size, coach qualifications, safety protocols, and pedagogical standards.

Aqua Swim Academy holds QualiCert certification across all seven pools — Sabine at Coppet, David at Lausanne EHL, Kyann at Lausanne Malley, Sienna and Julia at Montreux, Anissa at Aubonne, Leo at Fribourg, and Julie at the brand-new Geneva Vernier pool opening 1 September 2026.

That means every invoice we issue meets insurer requirements. You don't need a special receipt or a doctor's note — just the semester or monthly invoice we email you after payment.

How to claim your reimbursement

  1. Check your LCA policy documents (or call your insurer) to confirm you have prevention/fitness coverage and the annual ceiling.
  2. Enrol and pay via book.aquaswim.ch — by card, TWINT, or bank transfer.
  3. Download your invoice from the confirmation email or your iClassPro portal.
  4. Submit the invoice to your insurer — most accept PDF upload through their app or web portal; some still want paper by post.
  5. Reimbursement arrives within 2–4 weeks, directly to your bank account.

If your insurer requests any additional information — proof of QualiCert certification, a detailed class schedule, or a coach signature — email us at luna@aquaswim.ch and we'll provide it same-day.

One detail parents often miss: the registration fee

The CHF 50 annual registration fee is administrative, not a course fee, so most insurers exclude it from reimbursement. But the lesson fees themselves — monthly, semester, private, or camp — are always eligible.

If you're enrolling at Vernier before 1 October 2026, the registration fee is waived as part of our launch promo (card or TWINT payment only). After that date the standard CHF 50 applies.

What if I don't have LCA?

You can add complementary insurance any time — there's no annual enrolment window like in some countries. Call your current LAMal insurer (or shop around) and ask about their prevention or fitness module. Some are standalone; others bundle LCA hospital, dental, and prevention together.

Be aware that complementary policies often impose a waiting period (3–6 months) before you can claim, and they can refuse you or exclude pre-existing conditions because LCA is private insurance. If your child is healthy and under 6, acceptance is usually automatic.

If adding LCA isn't an option right now, the CHF 159/month we charge is still the most affordable coached group lesson rate around the lake — no contract length at most pools (30 days rolling notice), small groups capped at 6 swimmers, and Level 1 parent-baby classes all the way through to Level 9 endurance and three tiers of adult lessons.

Frequently asked questions

Does my basic LAMal insurance cover swim lessons?

No. LAMal is obligatory health insurance and does not cover prevention, sports, or wellness courses. You need an LCA complementary plan to get reimbursement.

How much will my LCA insurer reimburse?

It depends on your specific plan. Typical prevention budgets range from CHF 200/year (Helsana Sana) to CHF 1,300/year (Visana Traditional). Check your policy documents or call your insurer.

Do I need a doctor's prescription to claim?

No. Because Aqua Swim is QualiCert-certified, our invoices are enough. Just download your invoice from the confirmation email or iClassPro portal and submit it to your insurer.

Are camp weeks reimbursable too?

Yes — many insurers reimburse camps separately, up to CHF 500/year. Our full-day camps at Coppet and Lausanne EHL are CHF 690/week, so you can recover a large portion depending on your plan.

Is the CHF 50 registration fee reimbursable?

Usually not — most insurers classify it as administrative rather than a course fee. But all lesson fees (monthly, semester, private, camps) are eligible.

I just moved to Switzerland and only have LAMal. Can I add LCA now?

Yes. You can add complementary insurance any time. Contact your LAMal insurer or shop around for a prevention/fitness module. Be aware of waiting periods (typically 3–6 months) before you can claim.
